Israelis are prepared ? and not ? for an Iran attack

TEL AVIV ? Did you know:

  • If a bomb explodes near you with a little bang, that's a sign it is carrying chemical or biological weapons? A loud bang means a conventional warhead.
  • If an attack is chemical, you will know right away? But if it's biological you'll only find out after a few days.
  • If it is nuclear, you should lie down and cover your head? And don't get up when the first blast wave passes over you because it will be followed by a second wave.

Useful, eh?

All these facts are good to know if you are in Israel and war with Iran, and its proxies Hezbollah and Hamas, were to break out around you.

Report: Iran mulls 'pre-emptive attack' against Israel; commander warns of 'World War III'

Or if something happened with Syria, Iran's ally, which has large stockpiles of biological and conventional weapons.

With the latest opinion polls showing that half of Israelis fear for the continued existence of their state if war breaks out with Iran, and with more than half rating the chance of such a war within a year as "medium" or "high,? the more you know about what the war would entail, the better.

In an attempt to convey what he sees as a threat to Israel's existence, Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu used a cartoon to illustrate how close he says Iran is to developing a nuclear weapon. In a speech at the United Nations General Assembly he asked the world to help stop them. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

Here are some more facts:

  • If you suck a bead made of castor oil, it could kill you. It contains ricin, a lethal poison.
  • After Chernobyl, it took 25 years before Welsh sheep could be eaten because the nuclear radiation settled over Wales as it drifted most of the way round the world.
  • And cigarettes contain polonium 210, the poison used to murder the Soviet ex-spy Alexander Litvinenko.

Probably no country in the world is as prepared as Israel for such an attack, with every home built in the last 21 years possessing a mandatory bomb shelter. City centers have vast public shelters with special rooms set up for non-conventional attacks. And citizens are instructed in how to protect their bomb shelters against chemical and biological warfare.

Mistakes happen
But mistakes can happen, as I can personally attest.?

One evening in the winter of 1991 during the first Gulf War, with Iraqi Scud missiles rocketing over Jordan toward Israel, the bomb alarm sounded. My family quickly locked themselves in our bomb shelter, and I raced through the dark, silent streets to broadcast from our NBC News studio.

Israel's Netanyahu: Draw 'clear red line' to stop Iran from getting nuclear weapons

This had become routine. I spent all night in the studio, responding to the many alarms, and went home around 5a.m. I didn't check on the family because I knew where the Scuds had fallen and none were near my home.

This one time, however, with 30 minutes to go before my next live broadcast hit, I had a sense that something was wrong. For the first time after an attack, I called home to see how my wife and my three sons, all aged below six, were faring.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tells the UN general assembly Thursday that sanctions are not stopping Iran's nuclear program.

No answer. I called again. No answer. Twenty-five minutes to go before my next ?live hit? on TV with Tom Brokaw. I felt sick with worry. What could have happened?

I ran downstairs, jumped into my car and raced home. I figured a 10-minute drive, five minutes at home and 10 minutes back, I'd be in the studio with seconds to spare.

Life-saving decision
Ends up, because of that calculation, I saved my family's lives.

When the all-clear sounded, my wife, our three sons, my sister-in-law and the dog, a schnauzer called Tofi, couldn't get out of the shelter.

The heavy steel lock would not budge. They hung on it and pulled and tried and tried but could not open the door. When I arrived home, about two hours after they had entered the bomb shelter, I heard faint cries of "help, help."

Instead of pushing the handle up, they had been pulling it down, locking it instead of opening it.

I was able to open the door from the outside and all was well.

But if I had stuck to my usual routine and not called home and just returned at 5 a.m., after leaving them at 8 p.m. the night before, they would have been dead.

It's simple math: An adult breathes about one cubic meter of air per hour, children more. Five people in a small room of about nine cubic meters would begin to lose air after two hours. Seven hours? They'd have all been dead.

A miracle? Sixth sense? Whatever, it's a warning of what can go wrong in times of stress. And however prepared Israelis are for what awaits them, accidents happen. When Iraq attacked Israel in 1991, far more people died of heart attacks than Scud rockets.

Country on edge
Since that time, every apartment built in Israel must have a blast-proof room that protects citizens from conventional blasts and also, with plastic and tape, can protect against chemical and biological weapons too. Walls and doors are approximately 8-12 inches thick and doors and windows are airtight.

Every citizen has, in theory, a gas mask. In practice, there aren't enough to go around.

Everybody asks, do you think there will be war with Iran? Nobody knows, and if you see Israel?s crowded cafes, the bustling streets, the crammed beaches, you may think that nobody cares.

Yet Israel is a country on edge. Most seem to have bought Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu?s line that the price to pay to stop Iran from building a nuclear bomb is much lower than the price to be paid if Iran has the bomb.

Fueling those thoughts are memories of what happened when the Nazis killed 6 million Jews. Today, there are approximately 6 million Jews in Israel. Few Israelis can argue against Netanyahu's insistence of: Never again.

And yet, I don't know anyone here who has prepared their bomb shelter. They're all a mess, used to store boxes, suitcases, footballs and wine. They are used as computer rooms, bicycle storage, play rooms. The attitude is, for the most part, we'll worry about it when the time comes.

Until then, live life.

Smoking Cigarettes

Smoking Cigarettes

Hooked! ? There would be no better way to describe my years of dependence on cigarettes. I had to have a cigarette. That is the way it was for me once upon a time. Smoking cigarettes is one of greatest mistakes I ever made.

It was the cool thing to do. Nobody I knew knew it was a deadly habit. People smoked around babies, in restaurants, in movie theaters, and even on public transportation. You smoked wherever you wanted. It seemed everybody smoked.

There was no such thing as second-hand smoke. It was unheard of. In the 1960?s people spent many hours in smoke filled rooms, whether they were smokers or not. If you were a smoker you would walk a country mile if you ran out of cigarettes and had no other way to get to a store. You were hooked.

Cigarette smokers will spend their last penny or beg for extra change if they run out of cigarettes. They will do just about anything to support their habit. Quitting is no simple matter, either. It could very well be one of the hardest things you do in your life. But it can be done.

I tried to quit for years. I just couldn?t do it, at the time, and continued to puff my life away. One day fate stepped in when an old friend I hadn?t heard from in years called. ?Just wanted to see how you were doing,? he said. The last time I saw him he was a 2-pack a day smoker.

?Guess what, I quit smoking, he continued ... been 4 years.? He said he was amazed that he had actually succeeded and that he had used sunflower seeds to do it. I thought that over for about a week before I went out and bought a nice big bag of sunflower seeds in the shells.

My friend explained that you have to get the sunflower seeds in the shell, not the shelled kind. You need the shells for the cracking and splitting activity ? it is something to do with your hands and your mouth. Cigarette smoking is an oral fixation. It supplies continuous hand-mouth activity.

The sunflower seeds substitute the hand-mouth activity through the hard parts of withdrawal. They replace the cigarettes and offer you a substitute while you are detoxing. Hand to mouth, hand to mouth, something in your hand to put in your mouth. Just like cigarettes.

Instead of sucking up the smoke and blowing it out, you chew open shells and spit them out. Much healthier! I haven?t had a cigarette in over a decade. The sunflower seeds did the trick for me, too. Remember the cigarette smokes you?re just the sucker. Good luck!

Russian Church tells Pussy Riot to repent before appeal

MOSCOW (Reuters) - The Russian Orthodox Church on Sunday called for members of the Pussy Riot punk band to repent, on the eve of an appeal court hearing they hope will quash their two-year jail sentences for performing an anti-Kremlin song in Moscow's main cathedral.

The three women - who belted out a "punk prayer" criticizing President Vladimir Putin's close ties to the Russian Orthodox Church - were convicted of "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred" by a district court on August 17.

The tough jail sentences they received saw the West sharply criticize Putin and the Kremlin because of doubts over the independence of the judiciary, and global celebrities, including British musician Paul McCartney and U.S. pop singer Madonna, called for leniency for the women.

Vladimir Legoida, a senior church spokesman, said their stunt "must not remain unpunished whatever the justification," but said that any repentance, if expressed, should be taken into account.

"The church sincerely wishes for the repentance of those who desecrated a holy place, certainly it would benefit their souls," Legoida said in a speech.

"If any words of the convicts indicate repentance ... we would wish that they are not left unnoticed and those who violated the law get a chance to mend their ways."

A church statement after the August verdict indicated that the clergy would back a pardon or a reduced sentence, but that would have required Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, Maria Alyokhina, 24, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 30, to admit their guilt, something their lawyers say they will not do.

"If they (the church) mean repentance in the sense of a crime ... it definitely won't happen. Our clients won't admit guilt. A call for that is pointless," lawyer Mark Feigin told independent television channel Dozhd on Sunday.

A recent official opinion poll showed that more than half of Russians are critical of what Pussy Riot did and consider their two-year jail sentence to be a just one, with less than a third saying the opposite.

The trio's legal team and relatives hold out little hope that the sentences - which they believe are excessively harsh - will be quashed or reduced at the hearing scheduled for Monday, whether they repent or not.

"The sentence is predetermined; their repentance will not affect it in any way," Stanislav Samutsevich, father of one of the jailed women, told Reuters.

"The fact the church is calling for that is nothing but a public relations move to sustain their reputation in the eyes of the public, as the church says it is separate from the state."

Patriarch Kirill, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, has called Putin's 12-year rule a "miracle of God" and backed his presidential election campaign earlier this year.

Kirill dismissed criticism of his backing for the Kremlin on Friday, telling students that close ties between the church and state helped protect and develop society.

Texas State Fair Opening Day Parade shines ?Big and Bright?

The Texas State Fair Opening Day parade kicked off whith everything "Big and Bright" from neon dazzling floats to Elvis Presley's popping wheely's on motorcycles.

The Texas State Fair kicked off at noon on Friday with its opening day parade in downtown Dallas. Mayor Mike Rawlings served as grand marshal.

Cultural groups and high school marching bands were represented in the parade, and Big Tex?s 60th birthday was celebrated.

The parade started on the corner of Main and Houston streets and ended at Good-Lattimer Expressway. Hundreds of people of all ages lined the parade route, returning waves to princesses, clowns, and marching bands.

The parade featured ten floats, all approved months in advance. According to Head of Special Events Department and Dallasite Lisa Bouble, the planning gets started when the theme for the fair is decided. This year's theme was "Big and Bright."

?The concept for the parade starts in January when we get the theme,? said Bouble. ?We go back and forth with sketches with South West Parades Company and the actual building begins in the summer.?

The parade held true to its theme: floats with jungle and under-the-sea themes dazzled in neon colors, while thumping marching bands, baton twirlers, and Texas line dancers kicked up their cowboy boots behind each float.

About ten riders dressed like Elvis Presley zipped around on their motorbikes, whirling in circles as children clapped and screamed. They sped up, popped wheelies and circled back to do it all again, white capes flapping in the wind.

Princess and pageant queens made multiple appearances on floats, gaining 4-year-old Bella Mize?s approval.

?They?re not Disney princesses but they are really pretty,? she said.

The parade was sponsored by Reliant Energy.

Bouble, 48, said she has gone to the fair every single year and has spent the last 13 working on the parade. ?I?ve been coming to the Texas State Fair my entire life,? she said. ?My mom came here when she was pregnant with me in October and I was born that September.?

Part of being involved in the parade's production includes deciding which float makes the cut. Bouble said she looks for ?variety, originality and entertainment value and how would it be appealing to the crowd.? She likes the floats to be family wholesome and does not accept any political or religion themed floats.

?I thought I knew about the fair having gone all those years, but I?ve gotten to love it even more and get a whole new perspective working on the inside," Bouble said. ?For me, it?s in my blood.??

Tourists among 19 killed in fiery Nepal plane crash

Nineteen people have died in a plane crash in Nepal. They were on their way to climb Mount Everest. The plane crashed into a field shortly after take-off from the capital Kathmandu. It was bound for Lukla, the starting point for a trek through the Himalayan mountains to the base camp of Mount Everest. ITV's Paul Davies reports.

By NBC News wire services

KATMANDU, Nepal -- A plane carrying trekkers to the Everest region crashed and caught fire just after takeoff Friday in Nepal's capital, killing 19 people.

The victims included British, Chinese and Nepali passengers, authorities said.

The pilot of the domestic Sita Air flight reported trouble two minutes after takeoff, and Katmandu airport official Ratish Chandra Suman said the pilot appeared to have been trying to turn back.?

The crash site is only 547 yards from the airport, and the wrecked plane was pointing toward the airport area.

Reuters said it was a twin-engine, propeller-driven Dornier aircraft.

Investigators were trying to determine the cause of the crash and identify the bodies. Suman said he could not confirm if the plane was already on fire before it crashed.

Villagers forced back by flames
Cellphone video shot by locals showed the front section of the plane was on fire when it first hit the ground and it appeared the pilot had attempted to land the plane on open ground beside a river.

The fire quickly spread to the rear, but the tail was still in one piece at the scene near the Manohara River on the southwest edge of Katmandu.

Nepal officials: 6 survive, 15 killed as plane hits mountain in Himalayas

Soldiers and police shifted through the crash wreckage looking for bodies and documents to help identify the victims.

Seven passengers were British and five were Chinese; the other four passengers and the three crew members were from Nepal, authorities said.

Large numbers of local people and security forces gathered at the crash site. The charred bodies were taken by vans to the hospital morgue.

Gateway to Everest
The weather in Katmandu and surrounding areas was clear on Friday morning, and it was one of the first flights to take off from Katmandu's Tribhuwan International Airport. Other flights reported no problems, and the airport operated normally.

The plane was heading for Lukla, the gateway to Mount Everest. Thousands of Westerners make treks in the region around the world's highest peak each year. Autumn is considered the best time to trek the foothills of the Himalayan peaks.

Helicopter heroes save lives of severely injured patients

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? The benefits and cost effectiveness of helicopter transport for severely injured patients is of continued debate. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal Critical Care shows that for severe blunt trauma, patients transported by helicopter had a lower risk of death, compared to those transported by road.

In a multi-centre study, based in university hospitals across France, researchers compared initial patient status at the scene of the accident, with time taken to get to hospital, type of treatment received pre-admission, and to health at discharge, or after 30 days.

At first there seemed to be no difference in mortality between those transported by helicopter and those by road, however once the data had been adjusted for severity of injury the results became clear. Patients transported by helicopter stood a better chance of survival than those transported by road.

Dr Thibaut Desmettre, who led this study, explained, "Transporting very ill patients is a balancing act. Overall it took longer for patients transported by helicopter to reach hospital and they tended to need more emergency care once admitted. On the other hand these patients were more intensively treated at the scene and en route than those transported by road-ambulance crews -- which might go some way towards explaining their improved chances of survival."

However the benefit seen could not all be attributed to the more aggressive therapy they received before, or after, they arrived at hospital. Dr Desmettre continued, "We were unable to measure the distance the patients travelled, nor where their accident occurred -- some accidents occur in places where road access is too difficult -- and what impact this had on severity of injury or choice of sending a helicopter crew." Helicopters are a costly and limited resource and unfortunately the benefit to patients has to evaluated in this light. However, for these patients, with the most severe injuries, transport by helicopter saves lives.

Taking mathematics to heart

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Mathematics might seem like an abstract discipline, remote from real-world applications but their equations can significantly help understand and simulate the functioning of nature. Professor Alfio Quarteroni of the ?cole Polytechnique F?d?rale de Lausanne (EPFL, Switzerland) is leading the Mathcard project in developing mathematical models of the blood flow in our cardiovascular system. On the occasion of World Heart Day, he explains how his project could help surgeons and save lives.

Cardiovascular diseases are responsible for 50 % of natural deaths in the EU. Computer models could help surgeons improve operations such as bypass surgery or stent insertion. "As mathematicians, we use equations to understand basic physical phenomena," explains Prof. Quarteroni. "Maths is non-invasive -- there's no need to operate -- so we can use equations to describe the circulatory system in order to better understand human physiology and why certain pathologies occur."

A complex problem

"The first difficulty lies at the level of pure maths," says Prof. Quarteroni. "The equations to simulate blood flow are complex -- they need supercomputers to solve them in reasonable time."The second difficulty is in modelling the topologies and geometries of the human body, both healthy and damaged. The project works closely with surgeons and pathologists, using data collected in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans, computer tomography, etc. These experts also advise on the problems they need help in solving. Although ERC funding means the project has access to some of the best supercomputers in Europe, the challenge is to produce efficient algorithms that can simulate medical situations in sufficient detail.

"Blood flow has a strong 3D aspect," says the professor, "due to the dilation and contraction of the heart and the blood's pulsatile and vortical motion."

But 3D models are very expensive to use. "It would take one week on a supercomputer to solve one heartbeat in the aorta," he says, which rules out using a 3D model for the whole system. "We have invented a unique approach," he continues, "building 3D models for vessels where we need to simulate all details and using lower-order models for other parts."

The multi-scale solution

In the past, blood circulation was modelled in the same way as electrical circuits, a so-called 'zero-dimensional' (0D) model, which simulates time variation, not spatial distances. "We still use this model to describe the body's peripheral arteries," explains Prof. Quarteroni, "but then we use a 1D model for the main arteries, of which there are around 100 in the body."This means the team can account for spatial separation; they can treat major blood vessels as pipes and describe different conditions at different points along them. "Finally, for the carotid or coronary arteries, we describe the 3D behaviour of the blood so we use the lower-order models to provide accurate inputs to the more detailed 3D models," the professor continues.

Taking math to the ward

Applications include designing better 'drug-delivery stents' coated with a drug to prevent inflammation of the blood-vessel wall. "We can model the release of the drug, blood flow around the stent and absorption of the drug by the wall," says Prof. Quarteroni. "Also, as we age, our blood vessels lose elasticity," he continues, "and this affects the whole body's circulation. We can study the way blood interacts with this and help surgeons design better heart bypass surgery."

To take these ideas further, and see how some of them can be brought to market, Prof. Quarteroni has just won a follow-up 'Proof of Concept' grant from the ERC. "My interest is to take these simulations 'from maths to ward' and make them available on a platform for clinical use," says the professor. "By creating a database of simulations, the results can be available in minutes instead of weeks, so they can be used by doctors as a real-time tool."

Mickalene Thomas on Motherhood, the Mirror Stage, and Her - Artinfo

Despite her glittering portraits of unflappable, seductive black women?often decked out in passels of crystals and rhinestones?Mickalene Thomas makes more than just eye candy. In her first major museum show, ?Origin of the Universe,? at the Brooklyn Museum, Thomas takes on the trope of the female nude in art history, tackling race, gender, sexuality, and constructions of beauty. Meanwhile, her third show at Lehmann Maupin Gallery, which focuses on Thomas?s landscapes and interiors, opens on November 1. Chloe Wyma talks to the artist about her two shows, her family, and the power of the gaze in her work.

CW: The title of your exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum, ?Origin of the Universe,? is an allusion to Gustave Courbet?s notorious nude.

MT: I was interested in Courbet?s Origin of the World as a conceptual idea related to the female body, and I used that as a central focus for the show. For me that painting is very controversial, and it was very controversial for its time. I wanted to reclaim that pose by using my own body as the subject. I felt a little exposed, because I?m revealing a part of my body that one will never see unless they get very close to me. Putting myself in that vulnerable position allowed me to understand the positions that I put my own models and sitters in. I used to use myself a lot in my earlier works, but those felt more narcissistic. In this work, it wasn?t necessarily important for the viewer to know that it was me, the artist.

CW: And you did a second version with your wife, Carmen McLeod.

MT: Yes. It was a sort of call and response, dealing with the nature of sexuality on a different level, romanticizing the nature of relationships and intimacy?and also having this connection with a black body in relation to a white body. Beauty is so much about a particular type of construct, and I wanted to have that dichotomy be a subject to talk about.

CW: It?s an interesting coincidence that Jacques Lacan owned the original Origin of the World at one point, since Lacanian psychology is something you?re drawing on in your work.

MT: To see yourself, and for others to see you, is a form of validation. I?m interested in that very mysterious and mystical way we relate to each other in the world. I was in India many years ago and thinking about photography and photojournalism before there was digital photography. People would go to these countries and photograph kids; nobody ever went back and said to those they?d photographed, ?Hey, here?s the image.? On my trip I had a digital camera, and to show people what they look like gives them great power. And so those philosophical notions of Lacan relating to the mirror are so deep, in the sense of ?I see you, therefore you exist.?

CW: You?ve also talked before about the importance of Carrie Mae Weems?s piece Mirror, Mirror (1987).

MT: What Weems did, depicting family and gender, those social roles, really hit home?the dynamics in these relationships, dealing with beauty and intimacy. The mirror is a powerful tool because it forces you to deal with yourself on a deeper level. Conceptually, paintings are like mirrors. They?re an expression from the artist: ?This is how I view the world?I?m presenting it to you.?

CW: Your show at the Brooklyn Museum will also include your first film, Happy Birthday to a Beautiful Woman.

MT: It?s a documentary about my mother as a muse and how her beauty has transformed due to illness. The film gives the viewer a slow, methodical way of looking at her beyond what you would see in a photograph or a painting. I hadn?t photographed my mother since 2010, and she?s always been someone that I use in my work. At my last show she said she was sad not being a part of the work; I wasn?t using her because she was sick. And I thought, why should I stop using her because she?s sick? She has an uncanny beauty that has come upon her due to an illness.

CW: You?re expecting a baby soon. Has the experience affected your work at all?

MT: No, but what it has affected is my understanding and appreciation of time. I?m preconditioning my behavior. I can?t stay out late. I don?t drink as much anymore. It?s interesting how your brain just switches into ?you need to be an adult.? And I hope the baby will teach me how to be a kid again.

CW: Can we talk about your show at Lehmann Maupin? Most of the work focuses on interiors and exteriors.

Casino offers refunds on Seattle-Green Bay game

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? A Las Vegas casino took an unusual step Wednesday and offered refunds to gamblers who lost money when the Seattle Seahawks beat the Green Bay Packers on a controversial touchdown at the end of Monday night's game.

Derek Stevens, owner The D Las Vegas, seized on the attention being paid to the much-derided decision by replacement officials handling the NFL game and became the only casino in Las Vegas to offer refunds.

"I know exactly how it would feel if I was laying the number and I saw what happened," Stevens said. He declared himself "disgusted" with the ruling and said he just couldn't accept the outcome.

The Seahawks won 14-12 after a Packers defender and Seahawks receiver fought for the ball on a final "Hail Mary" pass play. Officials missed an offensive pass interference call and then decided there had been simultaneous catch by the two players. Under NFL rules, that gave Seattle the touchdown and the win.

Nevada gambling regulators said Stevens could make refunds if he wanted.

Another Las Vegas sports book operator worried the move set a bad precedent.

"Whenever there are bad calls we're going to start refunding? Based on what?" said Jay Kornegay, race and sports book director at The LVH casino. "We're supposed to pay out winning wagers based on official final scores by the league, in this case the NFL."

Some offshore online betting outlets have also issued refunds.

Stevens, who has been renovating and rebranding the high-rise downtown casino formerly called the Fitzgerald, said D Las Vegas will refund straight and money-line bets made on the Packers until Sunday ? but only on wagers made at his sports book.

State gambling regulations prohibit a sports book from rescinding a wager without prior approval from the Nevada Gaming Commission chairman.

The chairman, Mark Lipparelli, said a refund is different from rescinding a bet. He said that in his four years on the regulatory panel he couldn't remember a similar move.

"It's not a rescission. It's a refund," Lipparelli told The Associated Press. "That's within their discretion."

Tigers shut out Royals, pull into tie with Sox

By NOAH TRISTER

AP Baseball Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:30 p.m. ET Sept. 25, 2012

DETROIT (AP) - Anibal Sanchez retired the final batter on a weak grounder, and Detroit players began celebrating around the mound.

Moments later, the home crowd roared a little louder when the AL Central standings were posted on the scoreboard in left field - with the Tigers back in a tie for first.

"We control our own destiny. We've just got to continue to play good baseball," catcher Gerald Laird said. "We don't have to rely on anybody to beat anybody now. It's all on our shoulders."

Sanchez threw his first shutout in over a year, and the Tigers caught the Chicago White Sox atop the division with a 2-0 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night. Detroit had spent only one day in first since the start of August. The Tigers were tied with the White Sox after beating them Sept. 2 - but quickly fell back.

Now it's even again with eight games to play. Even in this season of expanded playoffs, Detroit and Chicago are in an old-fashioned division race with seemingly everything at stake - because a wild card isn't a likely option.

The White Sox lost 4-3 to Cleveland earlier in the day, then Sanchez (4-6) took the mound and retired the first 11 hitters he faced.

The Tigers trailed the White Sox by three games on the morning of Sept. 19, but they've made up the ground and will have a chance to win a second straight division title if they can finish strongly enough.

"Nothing is over, nothing is in," Sanchez said. "We're right there."

Sanchez allowed only three hits. He struck out 10 and walked one. Sanchez threw 105 pitches in his first shutout since Sept. 10, 2011, when he tossed a one-hitter for Florida at Pittsburgh.

Bruce Chen (11-13) gave up RBI singles by Prince Fielder and Delmon Young in the first inning.

Sanchez pounded the strike zone early in his best start since coming over to Detroit from Miami in a July trade. Only one Royals player hit the ball out of the infield until Alex Gordon and Billy Butler broke up the perfect game bid with consecutive singles in the fourth for Kansas City.

Sanchez got out of that jam when Salvador Perez's line drive was snagged by third baseman Miguel Cabrera.

"Sanchez did a real good job," Chen said. "One of those games where you just have to tip your hat."

The Tigers hit six singles in the first two innings, but Chen was able to limit the damage by getting out of a bases-loaded, nobody-out situation in the second. Omar Infante hit a shallow fly, and Cabrera and Fielder both struck out.

Detroit didn't really threaten again until the seventh, when reliever Louis Coleman struck out Young with the bases loaded for the third out.

Chen allowed two runs and 10 hits in 6 2-3 innings.

Sanchez now has six quality starts in his last seven outings. In the third, he stopped Eric Hosmer's comebacker with his bare hand, picked up the ball and threw it hard over to Fielder at first for the out. He made another hard throw to first on Jarrod Dyson's 1-3 groundout in the eighth.

Sanchez said he tries to throw to first like he throws home, since he can be wild when trying to ease up.

"He threw it good. It had a little movement on it, too," Fielder said. "Perfect throw. I just wasn't ready for it."

There was activity in the Detroit bullpen to start the ninth, but Sanchez returned to the mound to a warm ovation from the crowd and retired the side in order.

Cabrera went hitless, ending his 14-game hitting streak.

NOTES: The time of game was 2 hours, 13 minutes. ... The Tigers acquired RHP Greg Ross from Atlanta as the player to be named in an Aug. 31 deal that sent Jeff Baker to the Braves. Ross will be assigned to Class A Lakeland. ... Detroit RHP Rick Porcello (9-12) faces Kansas City RHP Jeremy Guthrie (4-3) on Wednesday night.

3 Qualities to Drive Your Success | Business 2 Community

Upon watching a recent episode of the television show, Perception, I recognized the writers hit the nail on the head on how to reach success for anything your heart desires. My perception is of how these three qualities affect business. And all three are driving forces that enable success.

1. Ambition

It will be difficult to achieve much of anything without ambition. Possessing the deep down desire to achieve a particular goal or set of goals will provide the motivation to do what it takes to succeed.

The only caution is to maintain good judgment when it comes to doing ?whatever it takes?. This takes into account the wide range of unscrupulous to altruistic behavior. It is up to each individual to decide their best route to achieve their ambitious dream. How you choose to proceed is in fact what will develop your personal brand.

Prior to your next ambitious drive, take time to contemplate and then list all the ways in which you might achieve your goal(s). Next, prioritize the ones that appeal to you most. Prioritizing is not always easy. You may do it in terms of quick and easy steps, the most direct route, least expensive, or most appealing route to take. Time and money are always the constants that need to be taken into serious consideration.

2. Focus

Once your plan is in place on how to proceed, focus is key. The expression ?Always keep your eye on the ball? applies to getting the goal for all endeavors. Have a game plan in place each and every day. Once again prioritize all activity.

At the end of each working week, create a schedule for the following week of ?have-to? complete. Prior to each working day, create a list of ?have-to? complete on a daily basis. Given income is usually a concern, begin with the biggest money making projects. These generally take more time to complete, so devote a specific amount of time each day to ensure completion in a timely manner.

Keep a running list of tasks as you move forward. Cross out the items as you complete. This list becomes an additional motivating force to do more. By being methodical, your efficiency increases allowing you to accomplish more each day. It becomes as if you added more hours to the day. In turn your motivation to do more increases and your focus becomes keener than ever.

3. Persistence

Persistence in business is a requirement on many levels. The negative thought of ?bothering others? or ?it?s of no use? will get you nowhere. But by adapting a willingness to learn from everyone around you in addition to self-help and formal education will provide you with the tools and a more direct route to accomplish your goals. Continual education, unwavering commitment to your projects, and following up with potentially interested others in a friendly style will all contribute to your success.

Ambition, focus and persistence will assist you in developing a stronger business model and will lead you to the Smooth Sale!

Four Breast Cancer Types Identified After Massive Gene Analysis

NEW YORK -- Scientists reported Sunday that they have completed a major analysis of the genetics of breast cancer, finding four major classes of the disease. They hope their work will lead to more effective treatments, perhaps with some drugs already in use.

The new finding offers hints that one type of breast cancer might be vulnerable to drugs that already work against ovarian cancer.

The study, published online Sunday by the journal Nature, is the latest example of research into the biological details of tumors, rather than focusing primarily on where cancer arises in the body.

The hope is that such research can reveal cancer's genetic weaknesses for better drug targeting.

"With this study, we're one giant step closer to understanding the genetic origins of the four major subtypes of breast cancer," Dr. Matthew Ellis of the Washington University School of Medicine said in a statement. He is a co-leader of the research.

"Now we can investigate which drugs work best for patients based on the genetic profiles of their tumors," he said.

The researchers analyzed DNA of breast cancer tumors from 825 patients, looking for abnormalities. Altogether, they reported, breast cancers appear to fall into four main classes when viewed in this way.

One class showed similarities to ovarian cancers, suggesting it may be driven by similar biological developments.

"It's clear they are genetically more similar to ovarian tumors than to other breast cancers," Ellis said. "Whether they can be treated the same way is an intriguing possibility that needs to be explored."

The report is the latest from the Cancer Genome Atlas, a federally funded project that has produced similar analyses for brain, colorectal, lung, and ovarian cancers.

64 senators seek presidential leadership on debt reduction

AN ASTONISHING NUMBER of senators - 64, divided equally between the two parties - have signed a letter urging President Obama to support the work of his own fiscal commission. They didn't put it in quite that cheeky way, of course, but the message was clear: Action on the debt demands presidential involvement, if not presidential leadership.

While the immediate debate in Congress concerns relatively minuscule amounts of the current year's spending, the senators wrote, "comprehensive deficit reduction measures are imperative." They called on the president to "engage in a broader discussion about a comprehensive deficit reduction package" - and cite the ongoing work of the Senate's so-called Gang of Six to craft a solution based on the commission's recommendations. "While we may not agree with every aspect of the Commission's recommendations," they said, "we believe that its work represents an important foundation to achieve meaningful progress on our debt. . . . Specifically, we hope that the discussion will include discretionary spending cuts, entitlement changes and tax reform."

An analysis released by the Congressional Budget Office on Friday served as a reminder of the seriousness of the problem, and the trouble the country faces if it stays on its current path: "Federal debt held by the public would double under the President's budget, growing from $10.4 trillion (69 percent of GDP) at the end of 2011 to $20.8 trillion (87 percent of GDP) at the end of 2021." One result is that interest payments would quadruple over that decade, crowding out other spending.

The senators' letter, organized by Colorado Democrat Michael Bennet and Nebraska Republican Mike Johanns, was intended to offer the president some assurance that, if he takes political risks on deficit reduction, lawmakers won't saw the limb out from under him. The signers included 32 Democrats, including Majority Whip Richard Durbin (D-Ill.), and 32 Republicans, including GOP Conference Chair Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.)

A single, relatively vague letter should not be mistaken for agreement on a final package; that will be difficult and painful to achieve. Still, when it's difficult to get a filibuster-proof majority to agree on naming a new post office, securing that number of signatures from senators across the spectrum is no small feat. And it is significant that such a large number endorsed the fundamental conclusion of the fiscal commission - that the only realistic way to deal with the debt is with a comprehensive, multi-pronged approach combining spending cuts, entitlement changes and tax reform. "I do not believe that the hard things that need to be done can be done without the White House being involved every step of the way," Mr. Johanns told reporters. We hope the president is reading his mail - and taking it to heart.

The RI GOP has a cohort of Ron Paul supporters

Who knew? There?s a bigger-than-expected element of Ron Paul supporters among current GOP candidates in Rhode Island.

I found that out from Providence Republican activist Dave Talan?s informative e-newsletter:

Many of us were impressed by the strong organization put together by R.I. Ron Paul supporters during the Presidential primary, which resulted in them winning a quarter of the R.I. Delegates to the GOP national convention.? The R.I. GOP has welcomed them to remain involved with our Party.? And at least 11 of them are now running for local office (State Legislature, or City or Town Council), many of them for the first time.? These 11 activists are:

MIKE DONAHUE? -? House 68? (Bristol & Warren)
CHRIS CHIRINO? -? House 11? (Providence)
DAVID BIBEAULT? -? House 53? (Smithfield, Glocester)
SEN. NICK KETTLE? -? Senate 21? (Coventry, Foster, Scituate)
MIKE ROLLINS? -? Senate 4? (North Providence, Providence)
RUSS HRYZAN? -? Senate 6? (Providence)
ROBERT MATTEO? -? Johnston Town Council Ward 4
ANDREW McNULTY? -? South Kingstown Town Council
CATHARINE MARIE LEACH? -? Warwick City Council Ward 6
GARY TROTT? -? West Warwick Town Council Ward 2
ALICE LOSASSO? -? West Warwick Town Council Ward 3

So, does this speak to an independent-minded streak among these Republicans, or is it another wrinkle for a party long riven by conservative and moderate factions?

US, Iraqi leaders discuss concerns on Syria arms

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Vice President Joe Biden discussed with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki on Friday the need to prevent Iraqi territory and airspace from being used to ship weapons to Syria, the White House said, amid allegations of an illicit arms flow from Iran.

It was the highest-level contact between Washington and Baghdad on the issue, following a Western intelligence report that Iranian aircraft had flown weapons and military personnel across Iraqi airspace to Syria to aid President Bashar al-Assad's efforts to crush an 18-month uprising.

Iraq on Thursday denied the allegation. The report said the flights had been organized by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Iran is a staunch ally of Assad.

U.S. officials said earlier this month they were questioning Iraq about Iranian overflights. On Wednesday, U.S. Senator John Kerry threatened to review U.S. aid to Baghdad if it does not put a halt to it.

"The vice president and the prime minister addressed issues of regional security, including the need to prevent any state from taking advantage of Iraq's territory or air space to send weapons to Syria," the White House said in a summary of the leaders' wide-ranging discussion.

But the statement stopped short of accusing Iraq's Shi'ite Muslim-led government of collaborating with Shi'ite Iran. Baghdad has resisted joining Western and fellow Arab calls for the Syrian leader to step down while also calling for a reform process in Syria.

Tehran is forbidden from selling weapons under a U.N. arms embargo, which is part of broader sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program.

U.S. Eyes Infrastructure Spending in India, Emerging Economies

Washington: With India and other emerging economies set to spends trillions of dollars to build infrastructure, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is hoping that they would chose America as their partner.

"The world has never seen so many people ascend economically so quickly," she told a high-level gathering bringing together executives from nearly 90 U.S. companies as well as senior government officials from India, Indonesia, Colombia and the United Arab Emirates.

"From Asia to South America, people are moving from rural areas into urban areas, earning more money, buying more cars, more televisions, more refrigerators, surfing the Web (and) joining the middle class," Clinton said at the Global Infrastructure Conference.

While this upward mobility is "great news" for the international community, it requires global leaders to respond to growing demands on infrastructure and natural resources, she said noting to build this infrastructure global construction spending was expected to grow from roughly $6 trillion a year to nearly $9 trillion a year by 2020.

"That's why we've come together today - to develop ideas and partnerships to make sure the world is prepared to meet this historic shift," Clinton said.

"Obviously, we want American companies to be your partners of choice in helping to build this brighter future. They have the quality, the expertise, the technology to add value, and to be there for the long haul," she said. "And of course, this event is just one opportunity to strike a deal."

This was the second global business conference hosted by the State Department as part of its "economic statecraft series" to leverage the expertise and the resources of the State Department to help American business connect with opportunities overseas.

Addressing the conference, U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk said that after a thorough review of the United States' model bilateral investment treaty (BIT) "U.S. negotiators are now advancing efforts to secure high-standard BITs with trading partners such as China and India, as well as Mauritius."
