Forecasts have New England fearing repeat of Halloween storm

CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts (Reuters) - New Englanders expressed disbelief on Thursday that Hurricane Sandy might produce a freak storm like last year's "Snowtober," which ruined Halloween, knocked out power and paralyzed the region for weeks.

As Hurricane Sandy raced northward off Florida's Atlantic coast, meteorologists pointed to computer models that showed one possible path for the storm would have it hitting New England early next week, bringing wind, rain and possibly snow.

"Oh no, I hope not," said store owner Laurene York, whose Mohawk Trading Post in Shelburne, Massachusetts, was buried under 10 inches of snow on Halloween last year.

"Deja vu from last year when we were out of power and stuck here," York said.

October 2011's monster snowstorm dumped more than two feet of snow in some areas, killed at least 12 people and cut power to more than 3 million customers across the region, including the worst outages in Connecticut history.

For the area's smallest citizens, the biggest hardship was the postponement or outright cancellation of Halloween.

"They really hope it doesn't snow on Halloween again," said Shannon Collins, whose children, ages 7 and 4, were "very upset" when their 2011 trick-or-treat routines were delayed by snow in Greenfield, Massachusetts.

Instead, they wore their costumes inside their snowbound house, and bundled up in winter gear to build a snowman shaped like a pumpkin, Collins said.

Street cleaning crews and utility workers vowed to use last year's chilling lessons to be better prepared for this year's potential storm.

"The past year has been all about improving storm response," said Mitch Gross, a spokesman for Connecticut Light and Power, the utility harshly criticized for its response to 2011 outages and ordered to improve its storm readiness.

After last year's October snowstorm, some 880,000 Connecticut homes lost power, some for nearly two weeks. Outages were blamed on downed wires, most of which were caused by fallen trees and branches.

"Our crews are prepared," said Gross, who said the company was closely monitoring the long-range forecast. "We're ready to respond."

CL&P has completed an independent review of procedures, technology upgrades to gather information in real time and relay it to customers, greater use of stronger power lines and utility poles, and tree trimming, Gross said.

"Our customers love their trees, and one of our challenges is to strike that balance, when we trim, between aesthetics and a reliable system," said Gross.

He said CL&P covers "one of the most heavily wooded areas of any power company in the country."

Chainsaws and snowplows were gassed up and ready to go at the town garage in Litchfield, Connecticut, said Jack Healy, public works director.

"If it comes, we'll be ready," said Healy, who said his crews on Thursday and Friday would be doing "all the preliminary things we would do before a large storm."

City officials in Springfield, Massachusetts, also urged residents to follow weather reports and keep "a very heightened sense of alertness" about the possible storm, said Thomas Walsh, city communications director.

Safety is a major concern, he said, especially in the wake of last year's October snowstorm, during which a young man was electrocuted in Springfield when he touched a metal guard rail that was electrified by a downed power line.

Google cameras map popular Grand Canyon trails

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz. (AP) ? Google and its street-view cameras already have taken users to narrow cobblestone alleys in Spain using a tricycle, inside the Smithsonian with a push cart and to British Columbia's snow-covered slopes by snowmobile.

The search giant now has brought its all-seeing eyes ? mounted for the first time on a backpack ? down into the Grand Canyon, showcasing the attraction's most popular hiking trails on the South Rim and other walkways.

It's the latest evolution in mapping technology for the Mountain View, Calif., company, which has used a rosette of cameras to photograph thousands of cities and towns in dozens of countries for its Street View feature. With a click of the mouse, Internet users are transported virtually for a 360-degree view of locales they may have read about only in tourist books and seen in flat, 2-D images.

"Any of these sort of iconic, cultural, historical locations that are not accessible by road is where we want to go," said Ryan Falor, product manager at Google.

Google announced the trekker earlier this year but made its first official collection of data this week at the Grand Canyon.

The backpacks aren't ready for volunteer use, but Google has said it wants to deploy them at national forests, to the narrow streets of Venice, Mount Everest and to ancient ruins and castles.

The move to capture the Grand Canyon comes after Apple chose to drop Google Maps from its mobile operating systems and opted to use its own mapping program that was derided for, among other things, poor directions and missing towns.

Steve Silverman, operations manager for Google didn't directly address the competition in saying: "Just trying to document a trail, it's going to be hard to beat this."

Google launched its Street View feature in 2007 and has expanded from 5 U.S. cities to more than 3,000 in 43 countries. Google teams and volunteers have covered more than 5 million miles with the Street View vehicles on a scale that other companies haven't approached, said Mike Dobson, president of Telemapics, a company that monitors mapping efforts.

"You could safely say that it's a standout, well-used application and they don't really have any competition," he said.

As the sun rose Monday, Luc Vincent, Google engineering director, strapped on one of the 40-pound backpacks and set down the Bright Angel Trail to the Colorado River ? a nearly 10-mile hike that goes from 6,900 feet in elevation to 2,400 feet. He hiked back up from Phantom Ranch, which can be 30 degrees warmer than at the rim, through the South Kaibab Trail and also gathered data on other trails.

The so-called trekker captures images every 2.5 seconds with 15 cameras that are 5 megapixels each, from the rest areas, the steep switchbacks, the change from juniper trees to scrub brush and the traffic that moves aside as a courtesy to mule riders.

The GPS data is limited, so Google must compensate with sensors that record temperature, vibrations and the orientation of the device as it changes, before it stiches the images together and makes them available to users in a few months, Falor said.

Hikers that were on the trail when the data was gathered will have their faces blurred ? an attempt by Google to ensure privacy. Street View has run into problems in places like Europe and Australia for scooping up information transmitted over unsecured wireless networks.

A removable hard drive on the trekker stores the data gathered at the Grand Canyon. Tourists looked at the trekker strangely this week, as if it was something from outer space.

Sharon Kerfoot, a first-time visitor from Alberta said being able to view the terrain ahead of time, gauge the difficulty of the hike and know just how wide the path is would benefit those considering a trip to the Grand Canyon. She and a group of friends headed down the same path as Vincent but on mules, not foot.

"I think it's an excellent idea to give people a broader perspective on what they're getting into," she said.

What the images won't tell visitors is how much water they should carry down the trails, how to prepare for temperature changes, what type of food to bring and how much, and how best to protect the natural resources, park spokeswoman Maureen Oltrogge said.

"Stitched together with other information out there, the technology could be valuable," she said.

Scientists deepen genetic understanding of multiple sclerosis

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? Scientists have discovered that 30 per cent of our likelihood of developing multiple sclerosis (MS) can be explained by 475,806 genetic variants in our genome. Genome-wide Association Studies (GWAS) commonly screen these variants, looking for genetic links to diseases.

Corey Watson, a recent Simon Fraser University doctoral graduate in biology, his thesis supervisor SFU biologist Felix Breden and three scientists in the United Kingdom have just had their findings published online in Scientific Reports. It's a sub-publication of the journal Nature.

An inflammatory disease of the central nervous system, MS is the most common neurological disorder among young adults. Canada has one of the highest MS rates in the world.

Watson and his colleagues recently helped quantify MS genetic susceptibility by taking a closer look at GWAS-identified variants in the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) region in 1,854 MS patients. The region has long been associated with MS susceptibility.

The MS patients' variants were compared to those of 5,164 controls, people without MS.

They noted that eight percent of our 30-per-cent genetic susceptibility to MS is linked to small DNA variations on chromosome 6, which have also long been associated with MS susceptibility.

The MHC encodes proteins that facilitate communication between certain cells in the immune system. Outside of the MHC, a good majority of genetic susceptibility can't be nailed down because current studies don't allow for all variants in our genome to be captured.

"Much of the liability is unaccounted for because current research methods don't enable us to fully interrogate our genome in the context of risk for MS or other diseases," says Watson.

The researchers believe that one place to look for additional genetic causes of MS may be in genes that have variants that are rare in the population. "The importance of rare gene variants in MS has been illustrated in two recent studies," notes Watson, now a postdoctoral researcher at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York.

"But these variants, too, are generally poorly represented by genetic markers captured in GWAS, like the one our study was based on."

The good news is that you have all that info and those bazillion data points at your fingertips. The bad news? See the good news.

As the title to this post proclaims, success doesn?t come from set recipes. We?re not baking cookies from a prepackaged batch of cookie dough, when all that?s required is to slappin? the dough down onto the bakin? pan, and turnin? the oven on, per printed instructions. Investing requires different ingredients for different investors, even though their most important goal ? retirement ? may be the same as millions of others. What passes for real analysis, not to mention strategy(s) is often nothin? more than over simplified formulas applied to broadly described circumstances, which are then recognized by thousands of people who think the various strategies/recipes/formulas apply to them. Again, we?re not bakin? cookies here. We?re investing to create the most important thing there is as we grow older ? after health ?n family ? retirement income.

What happens is that a particular strategy is put forth as superior. Any strategy, when assessed in a vacuum, can deliver damaging results when applied in the rough ?n tumble of real life. Even if any particular strategy delivers positive results, so what? Could they have been better if using a competing approach? Are there distasteful long term consequences for which you?re currently unaware? How would you know?

And there?s the rub.

The decisions you as an investor?made yesterday,?make today, and will make five years from now ? on what strategy(s) to employ ? will literally make the difference in the quality and quantity of your income at retirement. But again, the real fly in the ointment is the reality that what worked in San Diego in 2000, would be a wish for a financial coma today. What proves wildly effective for Fred, would be foolish for Abby, even though on the surface they appear to be two peas in a financial pod. In fact, what made sense five years ago, might be the last thing to do now. There are too many crucially important factors involved in the decision making process as it relates to investment strategy to approach it as merely the catalyst to a simple recipe.

It?s almost never about the ?best? strategy.

Was the steak prepared using the same strategy(s) utilized in making the sauce?

Regardless of what you?ve read and heard, a single strategy ain?t gonna produce the retirement you want. Even those makin? use of more than one strategy will generally fall short. What produces magnificently abundant retirements is Strategic Synergism ? the blending of multiple strategies, often completely unrelated to each other, in ways that ultimately enhance your final results. When an investor realizes the hugely superior results obtained when combining multiple strategies synergistically, a whole new menu of possibilities opens up. Everyone agrees that cash flow at retirement is the goal. It?s how you get there, and how much after tax cash flow your specific Plan generates.

Sadly, the vast majority of Americans are creating what I?ve come to call a ?FastFood? retirement. Fast food is fun every now and then, but we all know what happens long term if you live on it. Strategic Synergism works in the kitchen, and it works when investing for retirement.

The CoPilot Live GPS navigation app has been recently updated with a whole bunch of new features. High on the list is the replacement of Bing with Google search, and some deeper digging into the native Android experience, such as being able to launch directly into a navigation query from an address in an e-mail. The full changelog for CoPilot Live 9.3 reads: 

• Free map update – the latest NAVTEQ street maps
• Google search – CoPilot’s Local Search is now powered by Google
• Android integration – allowing tasks such as navigating to an address in an email
• New info display – including Current Road
• Themes – four new free colour schemes are available*

Huawei gives Australia peeks at its network hardware and code to regain trust

Huawei has had an image problem lately among countries skittish about trusting a Chinese telecom giant with the backbone of networks that its home government might like to snoop. The company's Australian chairman John Lord thinks that's just paranoia, and he's planning radical transparency in the country to recover what trust he can after Huawei lost a National Broadband Network deal. The firm is willing to give the Australian government "unrestricted" access to both networking hardware and source code to prove that there's no espionage afoot. Lord even likes the idea a domestic inspection agency that would greenlight equipment across the industry. All of the proposals represent a one-way conversation, however -- Canberra hasn't said if it's receptive enough to drop the cold attitude. There's a distinct chance that any successful return to favor wouldn't come soon enough to recover the most lucrative contracts, which could make any Australian change of heart a Pyrrhic victory.

Kingston fitness center focuses on mind, body | Gymrat Fitness

KINGSTON ? A fitness center is going up in a building on Third Avenue that used to house a roller rink.

Registered members were able to start working out at Vive Health and Fitness Center on Monday.

The center includes a gym with cardio and weight machines and free weights, several exercise rooms, a juice bar, saunas, steam rooms, massage therapy and a cycling room. The workout spaces are for members, but massages, staff nutritionists and the juice bar are open to the public.

In the ?functional training studio,? patrons work out on a turf floor using equipment such as kettlebells, medicine balls and suspension ropes.

In a cycling room, more than 40 bikes are lined up facing a screen that can show video footage of real rides, such as the beautiful fall landscape of Acadia National Park in Maine.

Besides the various ways to exercise, the center offers a variety of classes that are free for members, personal training and dieticians. New members get to meet with a trainer and dietician when they join.

?You have to have variety if you want to facilitate a lifestyle change,? said general manager Paul Meshyock. ?The goal is to have a lot of variety so that members can pick and choose what they want to do.?

Owner Diane McAliney said Vive offers a fitness experience not found within 200 miles of the center.

?I felt strongly coming from a medical background that we need to nurture the mind, body and spirit. When we nurture all three, I believe it prevents the body from going into a disease state,? said McAliney, who worked as a sonographer for 18 years. ?I wanted to offer it here because I felt there was a need in the marketplace.?

The center will have its grand opening sometime in late October.

To join, call the center at 570-371-3572 or go to vivehealthandfitness.com to register for a tour of the facility. Tours are by appointment only. The first 200 members to sign up will pay $59 per month for the first year. McAline and Meshyock would not name the price for people who join after the first 200 members.

In addition to the health offerings for anyone interested, Meshyock said the center wants to work with specialized populations, such as someone recovering from an injury or dealing with diabetes.

?Exercise is a form of medicine,? he said.

Column: Domestic violence is more than personal - The Salem News

Domestic violence is not a personal concern, but rather a social problem that requires a community response if we are to change the dynamics of abuse relationships. It is commonly defined as the use of power to control another person and ? according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institute of Justice ? an estimated 24 percent of all women in the United States have been victims at some point in their lifetimes. The Bureau of Justice Statistics further reports that on average more than three women and one man are murdered by their intimate partners in the United States every day.

The health-related costs are equally staggering. Nearly $6 billion is spent annually on health care costs related to domestic violence. Adults, unfortunately, are not the only victims, for children are also heavily affected. Some studies suggest that as many as 10 million children witness some form of domestic violence each year; approximately 50 percent of perpetrators who abuse their partners also abuse their children.

Since the beginning of the battered women?s movement in the 1970s, domestic violence advocates have recognized that the ?personal is political,? and have worked diligently for a response that acknowledges the disparity in power that exists in many relationships. Social activist Ellen Pence and social worker Michael Paymar have clearly identified domestic violence as a community problem. Their understanding that domestic violence is the manifestation of cultural systems of power and control within a relationship have, in fact, changed the way service providers respond to the problem.

The development of the coordinated community response intervention and the Duluth Model are culturally relevant and effective interventions that have changed the ways in which we respond to domestic violence. It has also helped us shift our thinking from simply providing resources to victims to figuring out how ? as communities ? we can hold abusers accountable. The coordinated community response intervention has also changed our perceptions about who bears the responsibility for responding to problems of domestic violence by inviting everyone to the table to be part of ending it.

Service providers, including advocates for domestic abuse victims, police officers and health care workers, continue to work diligently to provide safety to those who are in abusive relationships and to hold those causing the harm accountable. That, unfortunately, is not enough. Because domestic violence is not simply a relationship problem, it becomes everyone?s responsibility to be part of the solution.

How can we ? as members of the community ? help? As a first step, we must teach ourselves to recognize possible signs, those ?red flags? of abusive relationships. These may include such things as jealousy, controlling behavior and isolation. If you recognize these red flags within your own relationship, or in the relationships of those to whom you are close, help is available through local domestic violence organizations, your health care provider and the National Domestic Violence Hotline, which can be reached toll-free at 800-799-SAFE (7233) or on the Internet at www.thehotline.org.

The hotline website can be exited safely without leaving any evidence of a visit on one?s computer. If you recognize any of these red flags as characteristics of a relationship that a friend, family member or co-worker is experiencing, don?t be afraid to let them know that you are concerned for their safety. Acknowledge that this is a difficult, complex, scary situation, but that you are available for support. Don?t try to fix the problem. Recognize it as domestic violence and refer your friend or family member to a local domestic violence agency for help.

Changing the acceptance of domestic violence within our community is everyone?s responsibility. Recognizing the red flags and referring a victim to a domestic violence organization for help may not only save someone?s life; it is also an important step to changing our community.

Mass shooting in Wisconsin, suspect at large, police say

A tactical unit responds to the shooting in Brookfield, Wis. (AP)

A shooting near a mall in Brookfield, Wis., on Sunday left at least seven people hospitalized, according to local news reports, and police are searching for the suspected shooter.

WISN-TV first reported a "mass shooting" at the Azana Salon & Spa across the street from the Brookfield Square Mall at around 11:15 a.m. local time.

According to police, the suspected shooter is a 6'1" black male weighing approximately 200 pounds and was last seen wearing a camouflage jacket, grey sweater, blue jeans and carrying a white and black backpack. He was reportedly driving a black 2003 Mazda Prot?g?.

Officials initially described a "mass casualty" situation, WISN said, though to this point no fatalities have been confirmed.

A spokeswoman for Froedtert Memorial Hospital told the Associated Press that said four victims were being treated for non-life threatening injuries, and that three more victims were expected; an official at the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department told news service that deputies are looking for an active shooter.

According to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, the mall has been placed on lockdown, as has a nearby country club.

SWAT, fire and rescue officials responded to the scene, and a Flight for Life helicopter landed in the mall's parking lot. Police and tactical units were conducting a sweep of surrounding buildings, and a bomb squad was also called in.

In August, Wade Michael Page, an Army veteran with white supremacist ties, opened fire at a Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wis., killing six and injuring three others before shooting himself.

And Sunday's shooting took place less than a mile from a hotel where a gunman opened fire during a Living Church of God service in 2005. Seven people were killed and four wounded in that shooting.

No. 18 Texas Tech pulls 3-OT win at TCU, 56-53

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) ? Seth Doege stood in the pocket and completed the pass to Alex Torres like he has so many times in practice. There was another throw in the second overtime that was pretty sweet, too.

Doege's career-best seven touchdowns passes came in a variety of ways, and No. 18 Texas Tech needed every one of them on Saturday.

Doege found Torres for an 8-yard score in the third overtime after tossing a 25-yard TD to Jakeem Grant on an unconventional play in the second extra period, helping the Red Raiders top TCU 56-53 in the first league meeting between the teams since 1995.

"I was hoping they'd call that play. We practice it over and over and over," Doege said of his final pass. "Torres does a great job of selling it and he did enough where I could fit it in there."

After the Red Raiders (6-1, 3-1 Big 12) blew a 10-point lead late in regulation, Doege threw for a touchdown in each of the three overtimes. The last one came after TCU had to settle for freshman Jaden Oberkrom's Big 12-record sixth field goal to start the final extra period.

"I thought Torres was covered, and I didn't think he was going to throw it," Texas Tech coach Tommy Tuberville said. "But he let go and put it in the perfect spot."

Texas Tech began the second overtime in a wildcat formation, with Doege lined up wide. Two other players touched the ball before it got to Doege in the backfield on a play they had practiced for three weeks.

"It was sweet to get to run it in a game," Doege said.

TCU (5-2, 2-2), the Big 12 newcomer, has lost consecutive home games in a single season for the first time since it dropped its final two home games of 1998. Two weeks ago, the Horned Frogs lost their first Big 12 home game to Iowa State.

"Welcome to the Big 12," coach Gary Patterson said. "I do believe this. I believe we proved we can play in it. Are we unhappy we lost? Yes, but it was a heck of a game."

It was the most combined points ever for Texas Tech, and the second-most for TCU.

Doege completed 30 of 42 passes for 318 yards, including a 6-yard TD pass to Eric Ward in the first overtime, and Texas Tech quickly became bowl eligible a year after its first losing season since 1992. The Red Raiders were coming off an impressive 49-14 victory over then-No. 5 West Virginia.

After upsetting third-ranked Oklahoma last season, Texas Tech followed with five losses in a row that ended a Big 12-record streak of 18 consecutive seasons of bowl eligibility.

"We made a lot of mistakes," Tuberville said. "But we've been working real hard for a game like this, to win a game when you don't play your best."

And the Red Raiders almost let this game slip away.

Tech led 36-26 when Kenny Williams busted loose for a 47-yard touchdown run with 4:06 left in regulation. That came after TCU was held to a three-and-out following Doege's 8-yard TD pass to Torres and 2-point conversion.

Trevone Boykin threw a 60-yard TD pass to LaDarius Brown with 2:25 left before the Frogs failed to recover an onside kick. But they held to Tech to 1 yard before a punt, setting up a nine-play, 56-yard drive capped by Oberkrom's 42-yard field goal with 18 seconds left.

Boykin, the redshirt freshman who this month replaced second-year starter Casey Pachall, was 26 of 44 for 332 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions.

TCU had the first shot in overtime, and Boykin threw an 8-yard TD pass to Josh Boyce on the fourth play. Ward's third TD catch tied it again. He finished with six catches for 61 yards.

After the wildcat score to start the second overtime, Boykin responded with a 7-yard TD pass to B.J. Catalon.

Skye Dawson had 10 catches for 154 yards and a touchdown for TCU, a 19-yarder less than 2? minutes into the game.

The Red Raiders were down 17-7 before two touchdowns in a span of just over 3 minutes in the second quarter. They surprised TCU with an onside kick that led to the second score in that span after a replay review overturned an official's ruling of incomplete pass.

Moore had a 33-yard touchdown catch even with defender Kevin White right with him. That was only three plays after Moore was called for offensive pass interference when he pushed off the same cornerback to make a catch, the penalty wiping out a nearly 25-yard gain to the TCU 22.

Ward was initially ruled out of bounds after making a leaping 29-yard grab and then falling down on the far side of the end zone. But officials reviewed the play, which showed Ward's right elbow had landed in the end zone before the rest of his body came down on the line for a score that made it 21-17.

"We played a Tech team that was 5-1 and we lost by three points in overtime," Patterson said. "They made one more play than we did."
