CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? President Barack Obama is embarking on a four-day march through battleground states and the storm-battered Gulf Coast in the lead-up to his party's convention as he seeks to blunt any momentum picked up by Republican rival Mitt Romney.

As his party's faithful began streaming to Charlotte, N.C. for next week's convention, Obama was returning to Iowa on Saturday. For his part, Romney looked to capitalize on a newly energized Republican Party fresh from its convention in Tampa, Fla., with a rally in Cincinnati before joining running mate Paul Ryan later in the day in Jacksonville, Fla.

Both campaigns were crisscrossing the country as the race entered September, each day adding to the sense of urgency in a presidential contest that has remained tight since Romney sewed up the nomination in April. Both campaigns recognize that undecided elements of the electorate, including those in about eight key states, will begin to fully assess their options through the conventions and the upcoming debates in the weeks ahead.

"Hold us accountable. Listen to what we have to say," Romney said in a post-convention rally in Lakeland, Fla., on Friday. "I plan on winning in Florida. We love this country and we're taking it back."

Obama's run-up to the convention will take him through the battleground states of Iowa, Colorado, Ohio and Virginia, four states that he carried in 2008 but remain at the top of Romney's wish list. He was spending Saturday in suburban Des Moines and Sioux City, Iowa, before heading to Colorado for a Sunday event with college students at the University of Colorado in Boulder.

The Democratic Party's convention, which starts Tuesday in Charlotte, N.C., will focus more on where voters want their lives to be in the next four years. Obama inherited an economy grappling with a sweeping recession and the pace of the sluggish recovery has become one of Obama's greatest impediments to re-election.

The coming days, capped by Obama's speech on Thursday night, will crystalize his re-election pitch: an economy built on ending tax cuts for the rich and putting more effort into education, energy, tax reform and debt reduction. He will call Romney a peddler of failed trickle-down ideas that will hurt the middle class and the needy.

Previewing the convention, Obama campaign aide Stephanie Cutter said the Charlotte gathering wouldn't be about rallying the base or leveling "petty attacks" but would instead focus on "what we need to do with the country to move us forward, not back."

"We don't need to reintroduce the president or reinvent him, as in the case with Mitt Romney," she said. "Instead, our convention will tell the story of the last four years, how the president made some tough choices to help a country and the economy recover."

Both sides hope to convey the aura of leadership.

Romney made a quick detour to rain-soaked Louisiana on Friday while Obama joined soldiers at Fort Bliss, Texas, to remind the nation that he ended the war in Iraq. Obama was scheduled to travel to Louisiana on Monday to inspect flood damage in a storm that marked the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina's devastation.

Romney was capping his convention week in Ohio and Florida, the two most prominent states that remain up for grabs. The former Massachusetts governor's team said the Tampa, Fla., convention helped him present a clear contrast with Obama and showcase him as a viable alternative to the president on handling the economy.

"What Americans have seen over the last few days is a party and a Republican ticket absolutely committed to addressing the job crisis," said Romney adviser Eric Fehrnstrom. "You won't hear it from the Democrats in Charlotte next week. People have seen a diverse group of individuals who believe very deeply in the American free enterprise system. It's very different than the negative characterization the Democrats are trying to paint of this convention."

Television ratings for the final night of the Republican convention were down compared with four years ago. The Nielsen Co. said an estimated 30.3 million viewers watched Thursday night's coverage over 11 networks compared with more than 40 million over seven networks when John McCain delivered his acceptance speech in 2008.

See that? It's not your daddy's flip hybrid tablet -- it's the new dual-display laptop prototype from the fine people at Samsung. The body of the notebook is certainly in the vein of a MacBook Air or ultrabook, with slim metal slides that taper off into a point. The palm rests, meanwhile, are a brushed metal, with black chiclet-style keys above. On the bezel above the screen is a camera.

The magic, however, doesn't happen until you close the thing, turning on a display on the hood. Yep, it's yet another attempt to capitalize on Windows 8's dual-nature. Inside, you've got a fully functioning laptop and outside you've a touchscreen tablet that, yes, utilizes everyone's favorite proprietary stylus, the S-pen, and there's also a rear facing camera on the outside. Perhaps it's all that functionality packed inside, but this prototype is certainly heavier than your standard ultrabook, and unlike most systems, a lot of that weight is located in the display -- we're sure there's a fair amount of internals located up there.

This being a prototype, the Samsung rep we spoke with had no clue on what such a device might cost or when it might come to market -- or even if this thing will ever see the light of day, so don't get your dual-hopes up just yet. The hybrid was sitting right next to the 2,560 x 1,440 Series 9 prototype we recently scoped out and in front of a wall of concepts that explore the brave new world of elastic form factors to their fullest. This $10K Chinese car comes equipped with remote control ? seriously

Google may have a self-driving car in the lab. But Chinese automotive company BYD has a car you can buy today ? with an actual, real, operational remote control.

The BYD Su Rui is an ordinary-looking 5-seat sedan with 154 horsepower and 36 miles to the gallon. But it comes standard with very un-ordinary remote control technology that allows owners to park the car in tight spots, call the car over to pick them up in case of inclement weather, or show off for their friends ? all at the sedate pace of 1.2 miles per hour.

At least, until hackers figure out a way to boost that speed.

BYD won a ?Best Leading Science and Technology? award at the 2012 Beijing Auto Show for its remote driving technology. And while it won?t allow owners to drive their vehicles at the speed and distance of James Bond?s BMW in Tomorrow Never Dies, it is the first ever full-size vehicle you can treat like an RC toy from Radio Shack.

Using the included remote, drivers can start the car, move it forward and backward, and turn. Owners can also turn on the heat or A/C to get the cabin temperature just right.

The remote control functionality, however, is only operational when the driver is within 30 feet of the vehicle, likely as a safety measure. Again, I?m sure that interested hackers will increase that range shortly. In fact, install a camera, extend range via WiFi or radio ? and the remote control could get even more interesting.

And I?m not sure why hackers would only mod their own vehicles. I?m predicting here and now that we will hear stories of car hacking, whether malicious or prank. And possibly even police reports of vehicles being stolen without any actual thief being physically present.

The Su Rui is available for just $10,365 USD for the base 1.5 liter model, or $15,710 for a turbo-charged version.

Debt crisis: European shares turn positive as Italian stocks bounce

EUROPEAN stocks pared early losses and turned positive on Friday morning, halting a sharp three-day retreat, led by gains in Italy's blue-chip index.

Sentiment in the broader market remained cautious, however, with many traders preferring to wait on the sidelines until after a key speech by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke later in the day on monetary policy.

After helping contribute to a solid rally over the summer months, European shares have retreated in recent days as expectations of imminent stimilus from the Fed eased.

At 0735 GMT, the FTSEurofirst 300 index of top European shares was up 0.1 percent at 1,078.70 points, after falling to a four-week low at the open.

Italy's FTSE MIB index was up 0.5 percent, reversing recent losses, with Enel up 0.9 percent and Intesa SanPaolo up 1.3 percent.
